Design of the Abutments for the Kali Tlatar Pabelan Bridge

This research focused on the structural design of the abutments for the Kali Tlatar Pabelan Bridge, located on the Mendut–Tanjungpuan road section in Magelang Regency, Central Java. The bridge, with a total length of 40 meters and a width of 9 meters, was constructed to improve connectivity, support community mobility, and mitigate the impacts of cold lava flows from Mount Merapi. This study aimed to analyze and design the bridge’s substructure, particularly the abutments, including their stability under working loads, reinforcement requirements, and foundation capacity. The research utilized primary data obtained from field surveys and secondary data derived from cone penetration test (CPT) results. Load planning and structural analysis were conducted based on Indonesian standards, including SNI 1725:2016, PPPJJR 1987, and SNI T-15-1991-03. Data processing was performed manually using Microsoft Excel, while structural drawings were prepared using AutoCAD. The analysis included the design evaluation of abutment walls, wing walls, foundations, and pile caps, along with reinforcement calculations for flexural and shear capacities. The results showed that the designed abutments met safety requirements for structural loads, stability, soil bearing capacity, eccentricity, and axial and lateral forces. The reinforcement designs for the abutment walls, wing walls, bored pile foundations, and pile caps were adequate to safely support the bridge structure. The application of structural analysis software, such as MIDAS, is recommended for improving efficiency in future bridge design planning.
